Myofunctional Therapy At Dental Arts
What is myofunctional therapy? Myofunctional therapy focuses on strengthening the muscles of the face/mouth/tongue to promote proper lip seal, swallow, tongue placement and nasal breathing. When these muscle functions are correct, it will help create an open airway. And when corrected in children who are still in their growth phase, a side effect is proper jaw/airway growth also relates to the amount of space children have for their teeth to erupt in more ideal alignment, among other benefits. Adults can also benefit from therapy, although we can no longer influence the growth of their bony structures.
Indicators are:
- Poor sleep quality/fatigue
- TMD/grinding & clenching teeth (especially during sleep)
- Forward head posture
- Tongue tie
- ADHA behaviors in children
- Sleep Apnea
- Mouth breathing
- Narrow dental arch/vaulted palate/crowded teeth
